<part>Ann as: Toni Kirkland</part>
<date>PRC / 1945</date>
<director>Directed by: Sam Newfield</director>
<costar>Hugh Beaumont</costar>
<synopsis>A deep, shadowy, noir style, <span class="synital">Apology for Murder</span> contains some of the best close-ups of Ann’s career. Co-starring Hugh Beaumont who later gained fame playing Ward Cleaver on TV’s <span class="synital"> Leave It to Beaver</span>.</synopsis>
<synopsis> <span class="synital">Apology</span> also has the finest, high-fashion ‘40s wardrobe of all her pictures. <span class="annquote">“PRC gave me the wardrobe budget, and I went shopping”</span> Ann visited her favorite designers. <span class="annquote">“The gold metallic lounger was by Billy Travilla who had dressed me at Columbia, the black widow’s outfit was Adrian all the way from the hat down to the shoes.”</span></synopsis>
<synopsis><span class="synital">Apology for Murder</span> was so close to <span class="synital">Double Indemnity</span> in plot and character development that it was jokingly known on the low-budget PRC lot as "SINGLE Indemnity." Threatening a copyright lawsuit, Paramount forced it to be withdrawn from distribution.</synopsis>
<synopsis><span class="annquote">“Nobody told me,”</span> Ann was fully turned out for the red carpet premiere. <span class="annquote">“I was dressed to the nines and arrived at the Chinese Theater expecting the royal treatment, to find another movie playing there. No radio. No photographers. No explanation.” </span></synopsis>
